Product-specific notes for the Star Alliance Round the World beta module.

Beta warning

This tool is for planning, checking, and discussion only. It is not an authoritative fare construction, ticketing, route availability, or loyalty earning decision. Always check the current official rules and the booking airline before making a booking.

Accepted input formats

Routing format uses - for flight sectors, // or /- for surface sectors, and X/AAA for a transfer. Example: SYD-SIN-FRA-JFK-SYD.

An unmarked intermediate airport is treated as a declared stopover. Add X/ before the airport when it should be treated as a transfer.

Fare calculation-style input with carrier codes is also accepted. Example: SYD SQ SIN LH FRA UA JFK UA SYD. The carrier codes help identify the route, but they are not used to determine the Star Alliance routing result.

Do not mix routing format and fare calculation-style format in the same input.

What this tool does currently

  • Parses normal flight sectors using "-".
  • Parses surface sectors using "//" or "/-".
  • Parses X/AAA transfer markers, for example X/SIN.
  • Treats unmarked intermediate airports as declared stopovers.
  • Parses fare calculation-style input and extracts the airport sequence.
  • Resolves airports, countries, IATA Traffic Conference areas, and supported co-terminal groupings.
  • Reports the airport treatment, sector distances, stopovers, transfers, surfaces, coupons, and estimated total mileage.
  • Returns a routing result based on the airport sequence, declared stopovers and transfers, selected class, and implemented product rules.
  • Checks that the journey begins and ends in the same country.
  • Checks the 16-coupon maximum and the five-surface-sector maximum.
  • Includes explicit surface-sector mileage in the total estimate.
  • Calculates the smallest qualifying standard 29,000-mile, 34,000-mile, or 39,000-mile tier for the selected class.
  • Checks the standard minimum and maximum stopover limits.
  • Checks the maximum one stopover and three transfers at any city, including supported co-terminal groupings.
  • Checks the country stopover limits, including the USA/Canada-origin and Europe-origin limits.
  • Checks the international transfer limit by country and the domestic transfer limit in the country of origin.
  • Rejects travel back via the point of origin.
  • Checks the broad continuous TC1, TC2, and TC3 circuit.
  • Checks for exactly one Atlantic crossing and one Pacific crossing, plus the TC2 and TC3 crossing limit.

What this tool does not do currently

  • It does not use carrier selections to determine the routing result.
  • It does not confirm that a route is operated or that a carrier operates a particular sector.
  • It does not validate current member, participating-airline, codeshare, regional-operation, or flight-specific eligibility.
  • It does not confirm flight numbers, schedules, stopover durations, transfer durations, or surface elapsed time.
  • It does not confirm fare, class, or booking-class availability.
  • It does not price an itinerary or validate taxes, surcharges, validating carrier, ticket stock, or ticketing capability.
  • It does not check minimum stay, maximum stay, advance reservation, or ticketing deadlines without the relevant dates and market information.
  • It does not infer unentered travel back to the origin when the entered destination is a different city in the same country.
  • It does not guarantee that the great-circle mileage estimate matches the mileage used for ticketing.
  • It does not calculate loyalty points or status earning. Earnings depend on the program selected for credit, carrier, booking class, and program rules.
  • It does not replace the current official fare rules or advice from the issuing airline or travel agent.

How to interpret the result

  • Routing looks OK means no implemented routing rule breach or itinerary-specific warning was detected. It does not guarantee that the itinerary can be booked or ticketed.
  • Review needed means the routing may be valid, but an itinerary-specific condition, such as a date-dependent First Class product, needs review.
  • Rule breach detected means an implemented routing rule was breached.
  • Before booking or ticketing lists routine checks that need exact flights, schedules, availability, or commercial information. These checks do not make an otherwise clean routing amber.
  • Estimated mileage uses calculated great-circle distances, including explicit surface sectors. Confirm final mileage with the issuing airline.

Carrier eligibility and loyalty earning

The routing result does not require carrier selections. Before ticketing, confirm the marketing carrier, operating carrier, flight number, booking class, and product eligibility through the official Book and Fly tool, issuing airline, or travel agent.

Loyalty programs offered by Star Alliance member airlines use different points and status-earning rules, and complete information may not be available for every partner flight or booking class. Check each sector against the rules of the program you intend to credit.

Co-terminal and surface handling

Every explicit surface remains visible as a sector, consumes an explicit coupon in this beta, and has its estimated mileage included. An intermediate surface is treated as one stopover point.

For example, TSA//TPE is treated as a co-terminal surface within Taipei, and LGA//JFK is treated as a co-terminal surface within New York under the IATA multi-airport city list used by the app.

If the journey ends at a different airport in the country of origin, that entered destination is the end of the journey. This is permitted by the product rules. The validator does not infer unentered travel back to the origin, so a different-city endpoint does not by itself require review or add coupons or mileage.

Round the World-specific notes

The standard fare products use 29,000-mile, 34,000-mile, and 39,000-mile tiers. Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First Class products are recorded where documented.

The official material also records special products with market and origin restrictions. The validator reports the likely standard product. Any potentially relevant special product appears in the pre-ticketing checklist and must be confirmed separately.

First Class availability and completion limits are date-dependent. A First Class selection therefore returns an itinerary-specific review item rather than assuming that the product remains available.

Book and Fly is Star Alliance's official tool for planning and booking these itineraries. Use it to confirm the proposed routing, select eligible flights, and check current availability and booking conditions before ticketing.

Recommended use

Use this beta to test route structure, identify obvious rule issues, compare possible routings, and estimate the likely mileage tier. Before booking, complete the pre-ticketing checks and compare the itinerary with the current official rules and the issuing airline or travel agent.
